Advertisers canvassed on electoral register changes
2 Feb 2010
Advertiser body ISBA has asked its members for their views on the Ministry of Justice’s consultation looking at the advantages and disadvantages of the edited version of the electoral register and the impact of any changes made to it.
In 2008, the government-commissioned Data Sharing Review recommended the edited register should no longer be available for sale to, for instance, marketers who use it to ensure the hygiene and accuracy of their mailing data. At the time, ISBA said this recommendation was unexpected and a disproportionate response which fell outside the review’s remit.
On the basis of the evidence gathered, the Government will consider a range of options for the future of the edited register including abolition, changing the process by which individuals are included on it, or improving public awareness of it.
Advertisers have been asked to comment on ISBA’s draft submission (a copy of which is linked here) by 19 February at the latest, and to email responses back to Marketing Services Manager David Ellison who will compile the final submission. Any case studies highlighting the detriment caused by the withdrawal of the edited register would be most appreciated.
