Consult the public on plans for smart phone apps, advertisers tell BBC

Advertiser body ISBA has added its voice in support of the Newspaper Publishers’ Association’s call for the BBC Trust to undertake a Public Value Test to examine the BBC’s plans to launch a range of free mobile applications for smart phones before the first of these are launched in April.
ISBA’s Director of Media & Advertising Bob Wootton said: “We have little doubt as to the BBC’s excellence in much of what it does. However, there are surely very serious questions surrounding whether the BBC should be allowed to further divert the licence revenues it collects for its broadcast television services towards the development of digital media channels and applications.
“We certainly believe that any such plans should be subject to full public consultation, a component of which would be rigorous and thorough scrutiny by the BBC Trust.”
