New sponsorship guidelines for Scotland's public sector launched
11 Nov 2008
New official guidelines have been drawn up for public sector organisations in Scotland involved in commercial sponsorship relationships.
The guidelines, produced by Consumer Focus Scotland – Scotland’s new consumer council – were developed with support from the Scottish Government and input from ISBA the voice of British advertisers.
Recognising that commercial sponsorship can impact upon many different audiences, for example children in youth clubs or patients in healthcare settings, the guidelines will now be distributed to senior managers in local government, health boards and almost 4,000 public sector organisations.
ISBA’s Public Affairs Director Ian Twinn said: “We hope that the guidelines succeed in raising awareness of the issues relating to commercial sponsorship in the public sector.
“Government and business now recognise that the issue of commercial sponsorship affects more than just school settings and that many other consumers, not simply children and young people, can be influenced.
“So we also hope the guidelines will help to promote a sense of responsibility right across the public sector estate.”

In 2006, the Scottish Consumer Council published guidelines for schools (only) that look at the specific issues of sponsorship in an educational setting. These can be downloaded here
