ISBA reacts to Sky / ITV announcement

Sky and ITV have announced that Sky will acquire ITV Media and Entertainment, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. ITV have also published the news here, noting that:

  • The transaction is expected to be completed in the second half of 2027
  • It includes ITVX and ITV’s free-to-air channels, but not its production arm ITV Studios
  • ITV Studios will have its shares listed on the London Stock Exchange and strike a long-term agreement to supply content to the newly-combined Sky / ITV

The Chair of the Culture Select Committee, Dame Caroline Dinenage MP, has reacted, noting that “With such a major consolidation of market share, regulators the CMA and Ofcom will have to look closely to make sure the deal is in the best interests of audiences”.

Given the significance of this development for advertisers, ISBA has already been gathering member questions and concerns in anticipation of the announcement. We are focused on the potential implications for competition, pricing, trading practices, measurement, planning and advertiser choice.

To ensure members have the opportunity to engage directly and hear more about the rationale behind the proposal and what it could mean for advertisers, we are also looking to convene an ISBA member Q&A with Sky and ITV as soon as possible.

Bobi Carley, Director of Industry Relations at ISBA, said: “The ITV/Sky deal is one of the most significant developments in the UK media market for many years. Advertisers will rightly want to understand what it means for pricing, transparency, independent measurement, innovation and market competition.

“ISBA has been engaging directly with senior leaders at both organisations, and we are hearing from brand advertisers on their questions and concerns.

“The interests of brands, who invest billions in UK media, must be fully considered throughout the process. We will continue to facilitate open dialogue between our members and the combined business to help secure the best possible outcomes – and we will ensure that advertisers’ voices are front and centre as these plans develop.”
