ISBA has today submitted its initial views and position on the proposed merger between Sky and ITV to the Competition and Markets Authority.
The CMA issued an ‘invitation to comment’ to any parties with an interest in the deal last month. ISBA’s response reflects engagement with our members on their priorities and concerns.
You can download our full submission below.
As the document states: “The proposed merger is one of the most significant developments in the UK media market for many years. Advertisers rightly want to understand what it will mean for pricing, transparency, independent measurement, innovation, and market competition. Our strong view is that the interests of brands, who invest billions of pounds in UK media, must be fully considered throughout the process.”
Next steps for the CMA
This is an information-gathering phase for the CMA. The Culture Secretary will later this year decide whether to issue a formal Public Interest Notification, which would trigger an investigation on the grounds of competition and plurality. This could run well into 2027.
Opportunity for ISBA members
Senior ISBA members can join an in-person briefing and Q&A session with Sky and ITV leadership on Thursday 24 September. This will be a unique opportunity to hear directly from both companies on the rationale behind the proposed transaction, their plans for the future, and the implications for advertisers.
